This unique sensor has been specially designed for underwater arrays and quasi-static mooring lines. The ocean ready sensor senses all the common utility parameters needed for determining the orientation of an underwater cable. The sensor uses a three axis solid state accelerometer for measuring total tilt and tilt direction. The total tilt angle measurement is computed internally from the total acceleration (which includes gravity) of the instrument relative to the length axis of the pressure vessel cylinder. A three axis solid state flux-gate magnetometer produces three axis field intensity measurement. This measurement, the tilt angle and tilt direction, is used to obtain an artificial horizontal plane for computing the magnetic x and y field intensity components. From these computed x and y magnetic field components, the heading of the sensor is computed. The difference between the sensor heading and the tilt direction is the sensor tilt direction. When the sensor is placed in parallel with the cable, it is the sensor tilt direction (in degrees with respect to magnetic North) that determines the direction of the cable.

Pressure Transducer

The sensor measures depth by use of a solid state pressure transducer. The scale and the offset of the pressure transducer can be set so the instruments outputs depth with any units (psi, meters, MPa, feet,....).

Temperature Transducer

Integral to the pressure transducer is solid state temperature transducer. This transducer is used to maintain calibration of the pressure transducer over temperature.

The PSI Integrated Tilt, Heading, Depth Sensor is intended for remote operation in ocean environments, primarily for determining the total tilt, direction of tilt and depth of moored cables. It has been designed to be placed over a sheave without undue difficulty. Typical applications include:

  • vertical and horizontal acoustic arrays
  • towed arrays
  • autonomous submersible vehicles
  • tow fish
  • buoys
  • shipboard control systems
